Bridging the Gap

Dealing with autism daily can be quite challenging for autistic individuals and families. It is however, especially challenging in an environment with low autism awareness. Without access to the right information, many families are left ill-equipped to provide the necessary support for the autistic individual. Worse still, they may be misunderstood, stigmatized or exploited due to a prevailing ignorance of what autism is. It breaks our hearts that there are children who may be denied access to schools, have low quality of social interaction or termed “insane.” This is why we are passionate about bridging the gap in autism awareness in our society.

We desire to see a neurodiversity and inclusive society, where special needs children are encouraged to live their best lives. This passion for awareness is what inspires our annual autism awareness events. Through our annual events we:

·  Enlighten and educate teachers, health workers, caregivers and child handlers on the best practices for handling autistic and special needs individuals.

· Provide the needed information and support for individuals and families dealing with autism.

·  Foster inclusion by enlightening and educating the general public on autism.

In 2019, we organized the Ogoni Awareness, which created awareness in Khana and Gokana local government areas in Ogoni, Rivers State. We have also had events such as; “Autism Breakfast Dialogue”, “Golf for Hope” and “Walk for Autism”, among others, all geared towards increasing autism awareness in our environment.
